Useful tips for hearing aid users

Communicating becomes easier once you get hearing aids. But it becomes even more enjoyable if you use the following simple techniques:

Did you know that you hear twice as much with two hearing aids – but understand four times as much?

  • Move closer! The closer you are to the person you’re speaking with, the easier it is for you to understand what’s being said

  • If you need to communicate with several people, don’t sit at the end of a table but rather in the middle where you can hear and see everyone

  • In a room with a lot of noise try to stay away from the noisiest areas – e.g. the entrance, open windows facing a street, loudspeakers or heating systems

  • Sit with your back to the window – when the light falls on the person you are talking to, it becomes easier for you to see his/her lips and facial expressions

  • Call in advance to see whether a theatre or cinema provides assistive listening devices or whether some seats are better suited for people with hearing problems

  • Arrive early at lectures or seminars and ask the speaker to use a microphone

  • Try to reduce background noise – turn down the music, close the windows or find a quieter place to talk
